Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Foreign Ministry has denied news of the Hamas group's plan to place Palestinian prisoners released by Israel under a ceasefire agreement in Indonesia.

It made the statement in response to a news report that the Palestinian resistance group is negotiating with Indonesia and Algeria to host Palestinian prisoners released by Israel.

"Until now, there has been no official communication via diplomatic channels between Indonesia and related parties regarding the issue," the ministry's spokesperson, Rolliansyah Soemirat, said in a statement released on Tuesday.

"The Indonesian government communicates officially with the Palestinian National Authority as the holder of the current Palestinian government authority," he added.

The Palestinian Authority (PA) led by President Mahmoud Abbas from the Fatah party is based in the West Bank, while Hamas—a rival faction of Fatah—is in power in the Gaza Strip.

Earlier, a Saudi Arabian media outlet quoted a Palestinian media report saying Hamas is in talks with a number of countries to accommodate Palestinian prisoners released by Israel under the recent ceasefire agreement.

According to the report, the countries that have agreed to accept Palestinian prisoners released by Israel are Turkey, Qatar, Pakistan, and Malaysia.

The report added that Tunisia has refused to accommodate the prisoners.

The agreement on the Gaza ceasefire as well as the release of hostages between Hamas and Israel took effect on January 19, 2025.

The initial six-week ceasefire phase includes the gradual withdrawal of Israeli troops from central Gaza and the return of Palestinians displaced to northern Gaza.

During the phase, Hamas will release 33 Israeli hostages, including all women, children, and men over 50 years old. Meanwhile, Israel will release 30 Palestinian prisoners for each civilian hostage and 50 Palestinian prisoners for every Israeli female soldier released by Hamas.

Hamas has so far released 18 hostages in exchange for hundreds of Palestinians detained in Israeli prisons. More than 70 Israeli hostages are still detained in Gaza.

According to the report, 99 Palestinian prisoners released by Israel have been deported to Egypt, with 263 expected to be released once the first phase of the release process is complete.
