Jakarta (ANTARA) - Environment Minister Hanif Faisol Nurofiq is pursuing the rehabilitation of the upstream of the Ciliwung River Basin in the Puncak area, West Java, as part of the efforts to prevent flooding.

He revealed that changes in spatial planning have altered the protected area in the Ciliwung River Basin, which ideally should serve as a watershed area.

Changes in spatial planning have resulted in a reduction from 15 thousand hectares in 2010 to eight thousand hectares in 2022.

"Of the 15 thousand hectares, seven thousand hectares are very critical area. That is why we need to conduct replanting. There are also 1,500 settlements in the area that we consider to be relocated,” Minister Hanif remarked after an inspection in the Ciliwung River Basin area on Thursday.

"The scientific analysis stated there should be no settlements in the area. Hard work between the central government, Jakarta Provincial Government, and West Java Provincial Government is needed (to address this issue),” he remarked.

During the inspection, the minister also installed environmental monitoring boards at four locations, including tea plantations and tourist areas on the riverbank.

This step was taken in recognition of the impact that land degradation in the upstream Ciliwung Watershed has on flooding in Jakarta and Bekasi.

Hanif explained that land degradation has led to the loss of forest cover and trees, crucial for retaining water and soil in the upstream area.

He also stated that tourist attractions in the area are suspected of violating environmental regulations, prompting the Ministry of Environment to conduct a thorough examination and supervision before continuing the investigation.

If violations are confirmed, the minister stated that the managements of the four tourist areas face various legal actions, including administrative, civil, or criminal sanctions.

The managements may also be required to demolish permanent structures and undertake planting activities for land restoration.
