Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Indonesian government is committed to restoring the functionality of headwater areas, particularly in Bogor and Bekasi, West Java, to mitigate future flooding, Environment Minister Hanif Faisol Nurofiq emphasized.

The minister stated that the government is identifying and mapping structures that violate regulations.

"It is crucial that we rehabilitate all headwater areas, including those in Bekasi and Sentul (Bogor)," he told the press at the Presidential Palace Complex in Jakarta on Tuesday (March 11).

Nurofiq noted that the government has initially targeted around 30 structures in the Puncak region of Bogor for demolition, though the number could increase as data collection continues.

He then highlighted President Prabowo Subianto’s commitment to leading his administration in protecting the environment.

"The president has instructed us to take decisive actions to safeguard the environment," he affirmed.

Furthermore, the minister emphasized that authorities plan to summon individuals with information about permits issued for constructing these illegal structures for questioning.

"We will gather all the necessary data, and everyone should comply with the summons," he stressed.

He then stated that the investigation findings would assist the government in determining potential sanctions for owners of these structures.

According to the minister, the sanctions may include demolition orders for structures and rehabilitation of headwaters, waterways, and water sources.

Reports have indicated that land conversion in river headwaters has been identified as one of the leading causes of frequent flooding in the Greater Jakarta area.

During a press conference at the palace last week, Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) Head Dwikorita Karnawati emphasized that some upstream areas in the region struggle to absorb rainwater efficiently, regardless of rainfall intensity.

As a result, she noted, these areas are highly vulnerable to flooding and landslides triggered by heavy rainfall.
