"After Eid, we will build embankments in several places as a preventive measure for tidal flooding in several areas where it always occur," Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung said in Jakarta on Wednesday.
The plan to build mitigation embankments was taken up during the term of Jakarta acting governor Teguh Setyabudi in January.
However, there has been no further information regarding the location of the embankments and their length.
According to Pramono, the mitigation embankments will be built while waiting for the construction of the sea wall or the National Capital Integrated Coastal Development (NCICD), which will be completed in 2030.
The NCICD is one of the national strategic programs under the Directorate General of Water Resources of the Ministry of Public Works, which aims to control sea level rise, flooding, and improve environmental conditions using the third space concept.
The governor also reiterated the potential for tidal flooding in North Jakarta on March 28–29, 2025.
The areas that are likely to be affected include Muara Angke, Muara Baru, RE Martadinata Road, Cilincing, and Marunda Pulo.
Pramono has instructed the DKI Jakarta Water Resources (SDA) Service to anticipate tidal floods by carrying out mitigation measures, such as preparing available flood control pumps, among other things.
Earlier, the executive secretary of the DKI Jakarta Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD), Maruli Sijabat, said that he has informed residents living on the north coast of Jakarta about tidal floods, besides preparing other anticipatory steps.
The anticipatory steps include preparing evacuation facilities and refugee locations, he added.
"If evacuation is needed, we will prepare facilities for evacuation using boats. We can also maximize the existing facilities," Sijabat said.
He added that arrangements will be made at refugee locations to ensure that the basic needs of residents are met.
