Jakarta (ANTARA) - Minister of Protection of Indonesian Migrant Workers Abdul Kadir Karding met with the Hungarian Ambassador to Indonesia Lilla Karsay on Wednesday to discuss job opportunities for Indonesian migrant workers in Hungary.

The two also conversed about efforts to improve the quality of migrant worker protection and increase the Indonesian migrant workers' skills.

"We must improve the quality of protection for migrant workers along with their skills to explore wider opportunities as well as efforts to obtain foreign exchange for the country," the minister said in a statement released on Wednesday.

According to Karding, his ministry will cooperate with placement countries that have proper regulations in place on the Indonesian migrant worker protection

"The first is to have laws and regulations regarding workers. The second is to have a good concept of workers' protection, and the third is to provide guarantees," he added.

He then praised the Hungarian government's efforts to establish cooperation in the Indonesian migrant worker placements, considering there are hundreds of Indonesian migrant workers who have worked in that country.

"We also appreciate our cooperation with Hungary. Hopefully, we can improve it in the future," he said.

Meanwhile, Ambassador Karsay said that Hungary currently needs 50 thousand foreign workers.

"I understand that the issue of guest workers is indeed very important considering that Hungary's own needs are around 50 thousand people. In 2022, we had talked with the Indonesian authority regarding this matter," she added.

She informed that Hungarian entrepreneurs were initially worried about cultural differences among Muslim workers. However, after the arrival of the Indonesian migrant workers, Hungarian entrepreneurs expressed their satisfaction with them.

"Initially, they were very worried because of the religious differences because many Indonesian workers are Muslim and Hungarians are non-Muslims," she said.

However, the Indonesian workers demonstrated their hard work, ability to adapt, and keenness to build harmonious relationships, the ambassador added.
