Jakarta (ANTARA) - Deputy Minister of Industry, Faisol Riza, has said that Indonesia has the potential to take advantage of the momentum of factory relocations from China to ASEAN countries such as Vietnam.

"It offers a big opportunity," he added on Monday.

Regarding China's plan to relocate 630 of its furniture factories to Vietnam, he said that Indonesia could take advantage of this momentum to attract investors from China to establish their factories in the country.

This is due to the proposed reciprocal tariff protectionism policy from the United States (US), which will directly affect the industrial climate in the region, including Vietnam.

"Because Vietnam has a large trade balance with America, this reciprocity will have a big impact," he said.

He also advised entrepreneurs to re-evaluate their relocation, considering it will not bring any effect.

"If they relocate their factories to Vietnam, it will do nothing. The Trump administration is being serious with the reciprocal policy," he said.

Earlier, Riza confirmed that several Chinese entrepreneurs were interested in relocating their factories to the Kendal Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in Central Java.

The interest of Chinese investors in relocating their factories to Indonesia is inseparable from the policy of US President Donald Trump who is aggressively imposing import duties on goods from China.

Meanwhile, the manager of Kendal SEZ has prepared 1,200 hectares of land for the second phase of development.

Kendal SEZ executive director Juliani Kusumaningrum said that the occupancy of the first phase, which covers 1 thousand hectares, has reached 90 percent.

"The remaining 10 percent in this first phase will be utilized to complete supporting facilities, such as residential and commercial," he informed.

As of the end of 2024, the Kendal KEK has become home to 42 companies with a total investment value of Rp86 trillion (US$5 billion).

This number is expected to increase as several under-construction projects are planned to start operating in 2025.
