"The waste issue has implications for health and disasters. It may trigger floods and others," he remarked after visiting the Bantargebang Integrated Waste Processing Facility (TPST) in Bekasi, West Java, on Wednesday.
Consequently, his side recognizes the significance of upstream prevention efforts led by the Coordinating Ministry for Food, including in land and waste management.
"We must minimize health and disaster risks due to waste and other environmental management," he remarked.
He then highlighted several developments in waste management carried out by the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government, whose area is estimated to produce around 8,000 tons of waste daily.
Jakarta has established a Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF) facility designed to convert waste into alternative fuel for cement and steel industries in Rorotan, North Jakarta, and the RDF facility in Bantargebang.
On the same occasion, Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung expressed hope that the existence of RDF facilities would help decrease the volume of waste accumulating at landfill sites (TPA) in Jakarta.
He commended the central government's steps to encourage the development of Waste Power Plants (PLTSa) by merging three Presidential Regulations into one regulation governing waste-to-energy electricity generation.
The merger of the three Presidential Regulations was based on Presidential Regulation Number 35 of 2018, which envisioned PTLSa projects in 12 cities. However, only two have become operational so far: the Benowo PLTSa in Surabaya, East Java, and the Putri Cempo PLTSa in Solo, Central Java.
Beyond streamlining permits, the new regulation aims to regulate electricity costs from PLTSa.
"The price can be regulated jointly by the central government and regional governments. This is a good solution to handle waste problems throughout Indonesia," Pramono remarked.
