Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Indonesian Child Protection Commission (KPAI) has asked rest area managers to pay attention to the need for child-friendly corners, especially to respond to the surge in homecoming travel during this year's Eid al-Fitr holiday period.

At an online press conference on Thursday, KPAI member Aris Adi Leksono said that the commission directly inspected several rest areas on the Cikopo-Palimanan toll road on Wednesday and found that facilities for vulnerable groups, including children and women, were lacking.

"In several rest areas, though we had repeatedly appealed, they do not provide child-friendly corners that have games, play equipment that are helpful when children are bored from being in vehicles too long," he explained.

He further said that some rest areas were found not paying attention to women's needs, as reflected by the lack of lactation rooms for breastfeeding mothers, among other things.

In rest areas that have such facilities, the management must enhance the provision of information on how to access the services as well as the location for filing complaints, if violence or other issues occur, he added.

This attention is necessary following the KPAI's findings of several violations of children's rights during the previous homecoming period.

The violations included children not being registered in passenger manifests, getting separated from parents due to overcrowding, and joining the homecoming exodus on motorcycles, which is considered to be high risk. Children were also at risk of sexual violence.

He affirmed that there is a regulation on child-friendly facilities, namely the Public Works and Public Housing Minister's Regulation Number 28 of 2021 on Rest Areas and Services on Toll Roads.

It outlines the provision of facilities such as playgrounds for children and education facilities in rest areas.
