Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia's National Armed Forces (TNI) will join a search and rescue mission to Myanmar to help evacuate victims of a deadly earthquake that jolted the country on March 28 by sending teams of rescuers as well as medical and engineering personnel.

"Today, the TNI commander attended a Zoom meeting, chaired by Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture, and TNI will prepare a SAR team as well as medical evacuation, and engineering team," Head of TNI Headquarters' Information Center Brigadier General Kristomei Sianturi confirmed to ANTARA on Sunday.

The support is given as part of the TNI's humanitarian mission in disaster-hit or conflict areas, he said those deployed to Myanmar for the mission will collaborate with the on-site personnel to evacuate victims trapped in the rubble of collapsed buildings.

Meanwhile, the engineering team will support the construction process or rubble removal by using heavy equipment, he said.

In addition to deploying personnel, the TNI would also send aircraft, a hospital ship, and helicopters to support the evacuation process.

"They are the Rajiman hospital ship, three C-130/Hercules aircraft, one Super Puma helicopter, and three Caracal helicopters," he remarked.

He ensured that the aircraft, hospital ship, and helicopters would leave Indonesia for Myanmar on Monday, March 31, 2025.

Earlier, a 7.7-magnitude earthquake hit Myanmar on Friday, March 28, 2025. The quake tremors were also felt in India, Thailand, Bangladesh, Laos, and China.

The earthquake killed more than 1,000 people and injured 2,300 others in Myanmar.

In Thailand, the death toll was reported to be at least eight, while at least 80 people remained missing following Friday's earthquake.
