Jakarta (ANTARA) - Chief of the National Police (Polri) General Listyo Sigit Prabowo claimed that the number of people traveling during the 2025 Eid al-Fitr homecoming exodus and its return flow is 0.6 percent higher than last year's count.

At a press conference at a post set up by state-run toll road operator Jasa Marga in Karawang, West Java, on Sunday, he highlighted that while the Eid traffic volume increased, the number of accidents on toll roads instead declined by 12 percent.

"We also witnessed a decline of 88 percent in the fatality rate," he added, attributing these positive trends to the various operations and traffic engineering schemes implemented by authorities.

These schemes include a national one-way traffic system that was in place during the eastbound flow of travelers from KM 70 at Cikampek Utama Toll Gate in Karawang to KM 414 at Kalikangkung Toll Gate in Semarang Central Java. This system ended on March 30.

Regarding the ongoing return flow, General Prabowo launched a similar scheme across the toll gates in the opposite direction earlier on Sunday to ensure smooth trips for people returning to Jakarta and surrounding regions.

The Polri chief then conveyed information from Jasa Marga, stating that 52 percent of the vehicles that had left Jakarta via toll roads during the homecoming flow had returned to the capital city.

"Before applying the national one-way system, we had already implemented a similar scheme on a local scale since last night," he added.

Furthermore, the general underlined that the traffic operations and systems had also allowed for shorter travel times between the toll gates.

"It took people only five hours and 46 minutes to cover the distance during the homecoming flow, while those in the return flow required only five hours and six minutes. These durations are significantly shorter than those recorded in 2024," he pointed out.
