Jakarta (ANTARA) - President director of state-owned port operator Pelindo, Arif Suhartono, has decided to temporarily limit the entry and exit of containers at Tanjung Priok Port in Jakarta until container traffic returns to normal levels.

"For the time being, we have decided to limit the number of containers that will enter and exit the port until the situation normalizes," he announced here on Friday.

In addition, Pelindo has temporarily halted ship operations to allow the terminal to focus on ground operations.

"As the NPCT1 (New Priok Container Terminal One) terminal is still full, we have decided to move (container trucks entering and exiting the port) to another terminal," Suhartono informed.

He said that the main cause of the congestion at Tanjung Priok Port is the increasing number of freight vehicles coming to pick up and deliver containers.

The increase in vehicles is especially noticeable at NPCT1, which usually sees 2,500 trucks, but now their number has crossed 4 thousand.

"This was triggered after the Eid al-Fitr holiday period, and also because of the long weekend," he explained.

Suhartono assured that there is no system error or malfunction at the entrance gate to Tanjung Priok Port in North Jakarta, despite the long traffic snarls outside the area.

"We have been monitoring it since yesterday, and the flow has started to get better this morning," he said.

Earlier, head of the traffic unit of the Tanjung Priok Port Police, Adjunct Commissioner Martha Catur, said that the buildup of cargo trucks at Tanjung Priok Port was causing long traffic queues on Yos Sudarso Street, which extended to Cilincing, North Jakarta.
