Jakarta (ANTARA) - Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung apologized to the community for the severe traffic congestion in Tanjung Priok, North Jakarta.

"This incident has been bothering me. I conveyed my deepest apologies," he stated at the Jakarta City Hall on Saturday.

Taking full responsibility as the city's leader, he apologized to the entire community.

He clarified that the congestion in Tanjung Priok occurred due to the buildup of cargo trucks to pick up and deliver cargo at Tanjung Priok Port, which increased from the previous 2,500 trucks per day to four thousand trucks.

"I have just also learned this morning that the number has increased from four thousand to seven thousand trucks. This shows incompetent management in Tanjung Priok," he pointed out.

To address this matter, the governor instructed the DKI Jakarta Transportation Agency Head, Syafrin Liputo, to issue a stern warning to Pelindo, a state-owned port operator responsible for handling this congestion.

"This congestion has been ongoing for three days. Pelindo has openly apologized to the Jakarta provincial government and the public," Pramono remarked.

Pelindo attributed the container backlog to the long holiday period of three consecutive days and after Eid al-Fitr, but the governor emphasized that such incidents must not recur.

Pelindo had also said that congestion in the Tanjung Priok area was caused by unscheduled loading and unloading activities from three ships.

"This increase in volume is mainly concentrated at one terminal, NPCT 1, which received ships that were supposed to have arrived a week ago," Executive Director of Regional 2 PT Pelindo, Drajat Sulistyo, detailed.

He identified the three ships docking at NPCT 1 as MSC Adu V, Ever Balmy, and Starship Venus.

Sulistyo explained that out of the three ships, two were scheduled to arrive last week, while the third was expected 24 hours earlier.

As a result, those ships increased the loading and unloading volume at NPCT 1 Port.

His side aims to clear the long queues of container trucks by Sunday (April 20), by shifting loading and unloading operations from the crowded terminal to the empty one.
