Jakarta (ANTARA) - Deputy Minister of Women’s Empowerment and Child Protection, Veronica Tan, has called on members of the community to plan their families well to produce healthy and quality children.

“We all need to adopt a new mindset that having children must be accompanied by thorough family planning so that the children born meet quality standards for growth and development,” Tan remarked in a statement here on Friday.

The deputy minister made this statement while attending the "Healthy Local Rice" harvest event in Nagasepaha Village, Buleleng District, Bali.

Tan believes parents are responsible for their children; therefore, having children requires thoughtful consideration.

“It is not just about how many children can be had. Parents have the right to decide how many children they want. Still, they should also consider their economic capability and have the ability to provide equal opportunities to both male and female children,” Tan stated.

She remarked that a quality family must ensure that children do not experience stunting by providing adequate nutrition.

Deputy Minister Tan also highlighted that numerous women also serve as the backbones of their families.

“Many women are fighting as the backbone of the family. Besides being the family’s backbone, women are also expected to become family managers. Becoming a family manager is something learned on the job," she noted.

She noted that women's work to manage their households is frequently unrecognized and not acknowledged as a job.

On this occasion, she also urged local governments to involve women in development planning discussions.

“I remind local governments to involve women in at least 30 percent of the development planning consultations. Their voices are valuable and must be considered,” Tan stated.
