"Technology is our shield against the health risks caused by climate (change). We need science, collaboration, and digital innovation to deal with it," Deputy Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs, Nezar Patria, said.
He delivered the remarks at the Innovative Forum of ClimateSmart Indonesia in Jakarta on Monday.
He explained that the government is optimizing the use of new technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), to address the impacts of climate change.
According to Patria, AI utilization would enable the formulation of government policies based on accurate and scientific data.
He said that digital health innovation is essential for increasing preparedness and resilience, and thereby reducing the impact of a disaster or disease outbreak.
He noted that technology innovation can help realize quality care for the affected, for instance, through remote patient monitoring.
According to the Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs, the transformative capabilities of AI must be leveraged to improve people's quality of life.
Therefore, the ministry voiced strong support for the development of the Indonesian Early Warning Response System, or E-WARS.
In addition, the deputy minister also expressed support for the Innovative Forum of ClimateSmart Indonesia, saying it is expected to formulate solutions through the collaboration of stakeholders, including the Health Ministry and Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG).
He added that by combining climate and health data, AI is expected to become capable of better predicting, preventing, and reducing climate-related health risks by forecasting and anticipating outbreaks.
"We must utilize our technological skills to turn this crisis into an opportunity for transformation," he said.
