“We hope that universities, with their quality human resources and research and innovation capabilities, can support various institutions, including Basarnas, in addressing challenges,” Higher Education, Science, and Technology Minister Brian Yuliarto said in a statement issued here on Thursday.
The minister added that the collaboration could also encourage universities to become centers of knowledge that contribute to emergency response and rescue efforts.
He explained that through this cooperation, Basarnas could help raise public awareness on emergency preparedness, about which understanding is still lacking.
“Basarnas plays a vital and strategic role in Indonesia. We would be pleased to support its search and rescue operations,” Yuliarto said.
Meanwhile, Basarnas chief Mohammad Syafii expressed the hope that his side would enhance its vital role by working closely with the ministry, especially in human resource capacity building, research, and technological development.
“We hope Basarnas can become a center of excellence for emergency response. Everyone needs (to learn) effective emergency preparedness and mitigation, but in terms of human resource development and infrastructure, we need cooperation,” he said.
Meanwhile, the ministry’s director general of research and development, Fauzan Adziman, said that the cooperation with Basarnas aligns well with the ministry’s latest vision, which is “Impactful Higher Education, Science, and Technology.”
He emphasized that collaboration in research and innovation aimed at solving Basarnas’ operational challenges could have a direct and positive impact on the public.
“To realize this, we need clear statements from Basarnas so that researchers can understand what the agency truly needs,” Adziman said.
