"I believe their meeting will be seen as a positive signal for unity and a commitment to upholding the values of Pancasila," Wahid said on Monday, referring to Indonesia's state ideology.
Prabowo met Megawati during a national event commemorating the birth of Pancasila in Jakarta on the same day.
Wahid noted that Prabowo’s gesture of walking alongside Megawati during the event demonstrated his view that unity is a vital source of national strength.
He also said the reunion could ease public concerns about Indonesia’s ability to stay resilient amid global challenges—making national solidarity even more essential.
“It is crucial to remain united under the principles of Pancasila, which emphasize collective well-being,” he added.
Wahid also expressed confidence that the presence of Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka at the event dispelled speculation about political tensions within the country.
In the 2024 presidential election, Megawati’s Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) supported the Ganjar Pranowo–Mahfud MD ticket, while Prabowo—chair of the Gerindra Party—ran with Gibran, the eldest son of former president Joko Widodo.
During the Monday event, Prabowo reaffirmed the importance of unity in his address, emphasizing that Pancasila has long served as the ideological foundation for uniting Indonesia's diverse population.
He underscored the need to preserve and practice Pancasila’s values to keep them central to the nation’s development.
