Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Ministry for the Protection of Indonesian Migrant Workers (KP2MI) and the Indonesian Embassy (KBRI) in London, the United Kingdom, discussed opportunities for placing Indonesian migrant workers in that country, along with associated challenges.

“From this meeting, we hope to get inputs on the challenges of placing and protecting Indonesian migrant workers in the UK,” Deputy Minister of P2MI, Christina Aryani, said here on Thursday after an online meeting with the Indonesian Embassy in London, as per a ministry statement.

During the meeting, she said her ministry will reorganize and improve the governance of migrant worker placements in the UK.

This is important to open up opportunities for Indonesia to enter the UK labor market, she explained.

The United Kingdom is known to provide fairly high remuneration to migrant workers. Therefore, it is important to reorganize the placement of workers to the country, while paying attention to their protection.

“We also asked for the support of the Indonesian Embassy to map out the opportunity sectors for the placement of migrant workers in various sectors,” Aryani informed.

Meanwhile, director general of placements at the Ministry of P2MI, Ahnas, said that through the meeting, Indonesia sought to continue placing seasonal migrant workers in the UK, despite facing problems in the past.

“In the future, we will carry out restructuring so that the placement of migrant workers in the UK can be even better,” he added.

Deputy head of the Indonesian Representative Office in London, Sahadatun Donatirin, informed that the UK government is currently tightening and improving its immigration policies.

Regarding the problems faced in placing seasonal migrant workers earlier, Donatirin said that he is tracking the Indonesian government’s handling of the responsible placement company.

“So that Indonesia can resume cooperation with the British government in this matter and can send migrant workers with the correct procedures, both legally in Indonesia and the UK,” he added.
