According to a press release received here on Friday, during the meeting held at the Papua Governor’s Office in Jayapura city on Thursday, Ambassador Kaihilahti said that the government of Finland puts significant emphasis on environmental sustainability.
“Therefore, our cooperation is largely focused on sustainable forest management and digital transformation, and we hope that this collaboration can be realized, including in Papua,” he added.
According to Kaihilahti, Finland is committed to strengthening cooperation with Indonesia, especially in the telecommunications, forestry, and digitalization sectors, which are also being given priority in Papua.
“Hence, we highly appreciate environment-based and indigenous community approaches. We fully support various conservation programs that involve local communities, including through the cooperation between World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) Finland and WWF Indonesia,” he said.
Meanwhile, acting regional secretary of Papua, Suzana D. Wanggai, expressed her appreciation for the attention given by the Finnish government to Papua, especially in terms of environmental preservation, digitalization, and approaches that respect indigenous values and cultural traditions.
She noted that the meeting included a question-and-answer session on current needs and technical matters, which could later be followed up by the Papua regional government and the Finland government in accordance with the applicable regulations.
The meeting was attended by chairperson of the Papuan People’s Assembly (MRP), a representative from the Papuan Legislative Council (DPRP), and several officials from local government agencies.
Earlier, the Papua Communication and Informatics Office said that it is continuing to expand digital access in the province’s frontier, outermost, and underdeveloped (3T) regions to ensure equitable information technology reach through free Internet services.
The office has set an additional target of extending Internet coverage to 72 locations, including 40 churches, 5 mosques, and 27 village offices.
