“The perpetrators can be charged with various articles in Law Number 32 of 2009 and Law Number 18 of 2008,” deputy for environmental law enforcement (Gakkum) at the ministry, Rizal Irawan, said in Jakarta on Saturday.
He informed that Environment Minister Hanif Faisol Nurofiq has instructed all environmental services at the district, city, and provincial levels to immediately improve governance of the 343 TPAs across Indonesia.
This needs to be accompanied by action against waste management violations, he said.
So far, Irawan has launched investigations into three official landfills -- Burangkeng in Bekasi district, Bakung in Bandarlampung city, and Jatiwaringin in Tangerang district.
Case files on the Burangkeng landfill have been transferred to the West Java High Prosecutor’s Office. Investigators are still collecting data and information on the other two locations.
The ministry is also investigating violations at the Caringin Wholesale Market Temporary Storage Site (TPS). Investigators have examined witnesses and experts following allegations of waste management violations at the site.
In addition, the ministry is looking into a number of illegal landfills, including the illegal Limo landfill in Depok city. Two persons have been named suspects in the case.
One suspect, identified by the initials J, has been sentenced to five years in prison and fined Rp3 billion (around US$182 thousand), while the second suspect, S, has been put on the wanted list by law enforcement officers.
Similar actions are being pursued in the illegal landfill case in Piyungan, Yogyakarta. The ministry, through investigators, is currently collecting materials and information from related parties.
The steps, Irawan said, are a real manifestation of the government’s commitment to creating a clean, safe, and sustainable environment for all Indonesian people.
“The KLH will continue to strengthen supervision and ensure that every violation is dealt with firmly and consistently,” he added.
