Jakarta (ANTARA) - Speaker of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI) Puan Maharani has urged the government to take immediate steps to mitigate any impact from the rising tensions between Iran and Israel on the domestic economy.

“The government must mitigate the development of the global situation related to the rupiah exchange rate, fuel subsidies, and other matters related to the global situation,” she said in a press statement issued on Tuesday.

To anticipate the impact of the Iran and Israel war on the nation, DPR RI and the government will discuss the 2026 State Budget Draft (RAPBN) without delay, Maharani informed.

She further said she is aware that Iran’s threat to close the Strait of Hormuz could potentially shake the global energy market and result in a spike in world oil prices.

She then urged the government to be cautious in responding to the global conflict to avoid any detrimental impact on the country.

“Our politics are free and active. However, do not harm Indonesia’s politics and geographical situation,” she said.

She then praised the government’s quick measures to evacuate Indonesian citizens from the conflict area.

“The government is being proactive in repatriating and continuously evacuating our people (from) there,” she said.

In addition, Maharani appealed to Iran and Israel to jointly implement a ceasefire to end the conflict peacefully.

According to her, a prolonged conflict would harm many civilians, especially women and children.

She also urged other countries to refrain from actions that could worsen the conflict.

Marahani made the call in response to the United States’ attacks on three Iranian nuclear facilities, which threatened to widen a conflict that began with Israel striking Iran on June 13, 2025.

In the wake of the attacks, on Sunday, the Parliament of the Islamic Republic of Iran approved a proposal to close the Strait of Hormuz for all shipping activities.

The Strait of Hormuz is one of the most important sea routes for global oil exports.

The final decision on the closure of the strait will be taken by Iran’s Supreme National Security Council.
