Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono invited Mauritania to work together in addressing the Palestinian issue and the conflict in the Middle East within the framework of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC).

Sugiono conveyed this invitation when receiving a farewell visit from Mauritanian Ambassador Weddady Ould Sidi Haiba, according to an official statement from the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Kemlu), Thursday.

In response, Ambassador Haiba also expressed his appreciation and support for Indonesia's role in addressing the Palestinian issue in international forums.

Sugiono also proposed strengthening cooperation with Mauritania in the fields of trade, investment, sustainable development, and socio-culture as well as supporting mutual visits between officials from both countries.

The Indonesian foreign minister also expressed his highest appreciation for Ambassador Haiba's dedication and contributions during his tenure in Indonesia since February 15, 2024.

Ambassador Haiba is regarded as having fostered strong bilateral cooperation between Indonesia and Mauritania.

The bilateral relationship between Indonesia and Mauritania is significant, as Mauritania is a Muslim-majority country with strategic potential as an economic hub in Africa's Sahel region.

In addition, Mauritania is among the recipients of Indonesian grants under the South-South cooperation scheme.

Diplomatic relations between Indonesia and Mauritania were officially established with the signing of the Joint Communique Concerning the Establishment of Diplomatic Relations in New York on September 26, 2011.

The Indonesian diplomatic mission in Mauritania is currently managed by the Indonesian Embassy in Rabat, Morocco, with assistance from the Indonesian Honorary Consul in Nouakchott, the capital of Mauritania, while Mauritania has maintained an embassy in Jakarta since 2020.

Mauritania is one of the 57 member countries of the OIC, most of which have Muslim-majority populations.

The OIC is an international organization composed of Muslim-majority countries, aiming to strengthen solidarity and cooperation among its members in various fields, as well as to protect the interests and rights of Muslims worldwide.
