Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR) has announced plans to meet with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Monday (June 30) to discuss escalating tensions in the Middle East following the recent Iran-Israel conflict.

"We, at Commission I, will hold a meeting with the Foreign Affairs Ministry to discuss the issue on Monday," Deputy Chair of DPR’s Commission I, Sukamta, told the media at the Parliamentary Complex in Jakarta on Thursday (June 26).

He explained that the meeting would cover a wide range of developments in the Middle East, including the evacuation of Indonesian citizens from conflict-affected areas.

"Yes, we will touch upon all matters related to geopolitical developments in the Middle East," he noted.

When asked if the DPR also plans to hold a similar dialogue with President Prabowo Subianto, Sukamta stated that the date is still being coordinated.

"We intend to receive a briefing from the president on the direction of his foreign policy," he explained. "Once the president announces his schedule, we can inform you," he remarked.

He also highlighted that the meeting with the president might include discussions on bilateral cooperation with Russia in nuclear energy development.

Earlier, on June 23, Commission I Chair Utut Adianto stated that his commission would summon Foreign Affairs Minister Sugiono to gain clarity on the government’s stance regarding the Iran-Israel conflict and recent US airstrikes on Iranian nuclear sites.

“We are facing a complicated situation, where taking either side could be problematic. Our priority must be safeguarding national interests,” he stressed.

Meanwhile, DPR Deputy Speaker Sufmi Dasco Ahmad confirmed on Thursday that Commission I also intends to meet with President Prabowo to understand the government's perspective on the evolving Middle East situation.

He added that the DPR will also offer recommendations to the government on handling the issue.
