“The presence of various robots, including dog-shaped and humanoid ones, reflects the modernization of Polri,” head of the Polri’s public relations division, Inspector General Sandi Nugroho, told the media in Jakarta on Monday.
He made the remarks following a preparatory activity for Polri’s 79th anniversary event on July 1, 2025, which involved and showcased 25 police robots, including humanoid robots, tank robots, and robot dogs, as well as agricultural drones.
The activity was held at the National Monument (Monas) in Central Jakarta on June 27.
Nugroho emphasized that such modernization is necessary, especially since police forces in several countries, including in Southeast Asia, have demonstrated their readiness to operate robots.
He said that Thailand has introduced humanoid police robots, while Singapore has developed cyborg cockroaches for search and rescue missions.
“Dubai (the United Arab Emirates) has announced the use of robots for police duties. Moreover, China has trialled patrol police robots,” he added.
He further revealed that Polri has incorporated the use of robots into its 2025–2045 Strategic Plan (Renstra), with a budget already allocated for robot dogs in 2026.
“Robot dogs have the same use as K9 dogs -- detecting dangerous materials and items -- but are more efficient since they do not require food or trained handlers and can endure extreme weather,” he stated.
Regarding humanoid robots, Nugroho informed that they can be deployed for facial recognition and electronic monitoring of traffic violations.
“Chinese police have deployed such robots for patrols, while Dubai has used them for driving license-related services,” he said.
In Indonesia, he added, the Polri plans to utilize robots for various purposes, including surveillance of abandoned buildings and disaster-hit areas, bomb disposal, hostage situations, and search-and-rescue operations.
