Jakarta (ANTARA) - Forestry Minister Raja Juli Antoni stated that implementing the import deregulation policy for forestry products can provide legal certainty, facilitate investment, and create jobs.

"We will manage these regulations well to provide legal certainty, improve the ease of doing business, as well as create jobs," he noted in an official statement in Jakarta, on Tuesday.

In addition, the Forestry Ministry, along with the Trade Ministry and the Finance Ministry, has finalized the import deregulation policy.

"We have worked on this deregulation package together," he noted.

Earlier, the Indonesian government announced the first phase of its import deregulation policy to increase Indonesia's competitiveness globally.

The deregulation policy introduces import relaxations for 10 types of commodities, covering forestry products, subsidized fertilizers, plastic raw materials, other fuel types, food trays, certain chemicals, pearls, two- and three-wheeled bicycles, saccharin, cyclamate, and alcohol-based odor preparations, and also footwear.

Of these, the largest group is forestry product commodities, with 441 harmonized system (HS) code products receiving import policy relaxations.

"Most imported forestry products, such as logs, plywood, and wooden crates, are indeed raw materials for industry, so deregulation is needed," Trade Minister Budi Santoso remarked on Monday.

Imports of forestry products no longer require Import Approval (PI) from the Forestry Ministry. However, the government necessitates importers to obtain an import declaration from the ministry to ensure the legality and traceability of imported wood.

"There is still import deregulation from the Forestry Ministry to trace the legality of imported wood and ensure no exploitation of domestic forests. Therefore, legal advice is still needed, as a form of import deregulation from the ministry," Santoso remarked.
