Jakarta (ANTARA) - Minister of Environment Hanif Faisol Nurofiq has urged the Jakarta Provincial Government to adopt more serious and systematic measures to reduce waste, citing overcapacity at the Bantargebang Integrated Waste Processing Site (TPST).

“We are gradually urging the Jakarta governor to carry out meaningful waste reduction efforts,” Minister Hanif Faisol, who also heads the Environmental Control Agency (BPLH), stated during a visit to Teluk Gong Market in North Jakarta on Wednesday morning.

He stressed the urgency of waste management in the capital, where daily waste generation reaches around eight thousand tons—a figure that could increase as the population increases.

Currently, much of Jakarta’s waste is sent to TPST Bantargebang, which, according to the Environment Ministry and BPLH, is already overburdened and relies on open dumping practices -- stacking waste in the open without proper processing.

While the government has shut down several other landfill sites in various regions due to environmental violations from open dumping, Bantargebang continues to operate. Minister Hanif said this situation highlights the urgent need for Jakarta to take immediate and serious action.

“We have already taken legal action against several illegal dumping cases. However, enforcement alone will not solve the problem—we must tackle it at the source. The primary sources of waste are households and commercial zones,” Hanif emphasized.

The minister also reminded officials that Jakarta already has a Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF) facility in Rorotan, which he urged to be operational this month to help alleviate the capital’s mounting waste burden.
