Jakarta (ANTARA) - Bank Indonesia (BI) is working to integrate the national QR code-based payment system, Quick Response Code Indonesian Standard (QRIS), and electronic money services with the Nusuk card for Indonesian Hajj and Umrah pilgrims.

The initiative aims to ease transactions for Indonesian pilgrims during their stay in Saudi Arabia.

“We are continuing discussions with the authorities in Saudi Arabia so that QRIS and Indonesian e-money can be incorporated into the Nusuk card,” Bank Indonesia Governor Perry Warjiyo said at a working meeting with Commission XI of the House of Representatives (DPR) in Jakarta on Friday.

He added that the initiative is a part of efforts to expand QRIS cooperation to support seamless financial transactions for Indonesians traveling abroad.

He emphasized that Indonesia’s central bank is continuing to push for the acceleration of the payment system to support the transformation of the national digital economy and finance, as part of the Asta Cita development agenda.

“We remain focused on implementing the Indonesian Payment System Blueprint 2030, including industry consolidation, BI-FAST development, innovation, and international cooperation,” he said.

As part of these efforts, BI is targeting to begin QRIS services for outbound transactions in Japan by August 17, 2025. In addition, trials are underway to link QRIS with China’s QR payment systems.

Earlier, Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs, Airlangga Hartarto, revealed that Indonesia could potentially gain up to US$8 billion annually in foreign exchange from digital transactions conducted by Hajj and Umrah pilgrims through QRIS.

Hartarto said he believes that this economic potential could be redirected back into the domestic economy if transactions are processed using the QRIS system, which connects Bank Indonesia and Saudi Arabia’s monetary authorities.
