Her statement, issued in a press release on Friday, came in response to the recent death of a Brazilian hiker who fell into a ravine while trekking Mount Rinjani in West Nusa Tenggara.
"The safety of tourists must be prioritized — not only to save lives but also to maintain Indonesia’s reputation as a professional and safe tourist destination," Maharani said.
Media reports have suggested that Brazilian authorities may pursue legal action if an autopsy reveals that the death of Juliana Marins was the result of negligence.
Maharani stressed that ensuring the safety of international tourists should go beyond mere slogans.
"This is a real responsibility that must be supported by trained personnel, proper infrastructure, and strong, transparent safety protocols," she added.
She also highlighted the importance of preparation and coordination among tourism stakeholders for treks on Mount Rinjani, a popular but physically demanding destination.
To prevent future incidents, Maharani called for the deployment of professional guides, well-prepared evacuation teams, and an effective coordination system.
"The victim’s family and the public deserve a clear and accountable explanation to avoid speculation that could damage the image of Indonesian tourism," she stated.
She urged the ministries of tourism, environment and forestry, as well as the West Nusa Tenggara provincial government, to tighten standard operating procedures and improve training for guides and search-and-rescue officers.
"We also need to ensure the availability of proper equipment and technology to support rescue operations in mountainous terrain," she said.
Maharani added that the DPR will ask the government to respond formally to any legal measures taken by Brazil.
"We will encourage the government to take appropriate steps in line with existing procedures," she said.
