“Yes, the increase in tourist numbers is quite significant,” Endrip Wahyutama, public relations officer of the TNBTS Center, said in Malang city, East Java, on Wednesday.
According to data from the TNBTS Center, total tourist visits to Mount Bromo reached 321,732 in the first half of 2025, or up 58,758 from 262,974 in the first half of 2024.
While 309,564 domestic tourists and 12,168 international tourists visited Mount Bromo in the first half of this year, 256,224 domestic and 6,750 international visitors came to the area in the year-ago period.
Wahyutama attributed the surge in 2025 to more long holidays in the first half. This led to a boost in visits to one of East Java’s premier tourist destinations.
“In the first semester, there were more long holidays, resulting in high visitor numbers. Meanwhile, in the second semester, we predict a return to normal until the end of the year, or during the 2026 Christmas and New Year holidays,” he informed.
The TNBTS Center is planning to leverage the increase in tourist visits to strengthen visitor awareness and understanding of Mount Bromo’s status as a conservation area.
This effort is crucial to ensure that tourism continues to have a sustainable impact on both the local ecology and the economy.
The Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park is a renowned conservation area and a major tourist destination in East Java. Established in 1982, it spans a vast area of approximately 800 square kilometers across four regencies: Probolinggo, Pasuruan, Malang, and Lumajang.
It is the only conservation area in Indonesia that features a “sea of sand” (Laut Pasir Tengger), a vast 10-kilometer barren volcanic sand plain. Within this ancient caldera, four new volcanic cones have emerged, including the highly active Mount Bromo.
The park is also home to Mount Semeru, the highest mountain on Java Island, which stands 3,676 meters above sea level.
The park is one of Indonesia’s premier tourist destinations, famous for its sunrise views from vantage points, the dramatic Bromo crater, and opportunities for trekking, jeep tours, and horse-riding across the sand sea.
