Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia's Minister of Environment, Hanif Faisol Nurofiq, has urged businesses to support national waste management initiatives by allocating corporate social responsibility (CSR) funds.

“CSR funding should be directed toward supporting waste sorting facilities at the neighborhood (RW) level, providing waste processing technologies such as composters, bioponds, and Material Recovery Facilities (MRFs), as well as promoting behavioral change campaigns,” Nurofiq, who also serves as Head of the Environmental Control Agency (BPLH), said in a statement from Jakarta on Friday.

Speaking at the Waste CSR Forum at the North Jakarta Mayor’s Office on Thursday (July 10), the minister emphasized the importance of multi-stakeholder collaboration to achieve the national waste management target of 100 percent coverage by 2029, as set in the National Medium-Term Development Plan (RPJMN).

Nurofiq encouraged businesses to move beyond contributing to environmental problems and instead become agents of solutions. The minister affirmed that collaboration through CSR is a strategic and pragmatic approach to fostering an inclusive and sustainable circular economy.

“Effective waste management can only be achieved through synergy and commitment from all sectors—government, businesses, academia, civil society, and the public. It must follow a comprehensive, end-to-end approach, guided by circular economy principles,” the minister remarked.

The forum was part of the implementation of the Jakarta Waste Management Roadmap 2025–2026 Action Declaration and reaffirms North Jakarta’s status as a national pilot area for circular economy-based waste management.

Currently, Indonesia’s national waste management achievement stands at around 39 percent, with only 10–11 percent meeting technical standards. The RPJMN aims for 51.21 percent by 2025 and 100 percent by 2029.

To date, only about 30.4 percent of cities and regencies have submitted their waste management roadmaps through the Ministry of Environment’s National Waste Management Information System (SIPSN).

As a concrete example of government-business collaboration, the Ministry and North Jakarta Administration will distribute segregated waste bins through CSR programs to residents via local sub-district and neighborhood leaders.

The accelerated distribution and use of these bins is expected to improve waste sorting at the source and increase the operational efficiency of the Rorotan Refuse-Derived Fuel (RDF) facility, which the minister has instructed to become fully operational soon.
