The result marked a significant improvement compared to the team’s achievements in 2024, Indonesia’s para table tennis coach Andre Gunaya said in a press release received from the Indonesian National Paralympic Committee (NPC) here on Thursday.
Komet Akbar secured the gold medal for Indonesia in the mixed doubles class 20 event, where he partnered with Russia’s Olga Gorshkaleva. The silver medals were claimed by the men’s doubles class 8 pair, Adyos Astan and Yayang Gunaya.
Akbar also won bronze medals in the men’s singles class 10 and the men’s doubles class 18 with partner Banyu Tri Mulyono.
The remaining two bronze medals were secured by Mulyono in the men’s singles class 8 event and Muhammad Alfigo Dwi Putra in the men’s doubles class 22, where he teamed up with South Korean athlete Kim Bogyeom.
Coach Gunaya said that the achievement came as a surprise, especially Astan and Gunaya eliminating the 2024 Paralympics gold medalists—South Korea’s Kim Jung-gil and Kim Young-gun—in the semifinal.
He added that the achievements have opened a chance for the athletes to compete in the upcoming 2026 Asian Para Games in Nagoya, Japan.
According to Gunaya, all athletes have the potential to qualify for the competition, especially the men’s doubles class 8 and class 18 pairs, given the evenly matched competition. Indonesia has often won in these categories in singles championships.
Silver medalist Astan said that the level of competition at the ITTF World Para Elite 2025 in Nakhon Ratchasima was very intense, with many high-quality players participating in the event.
“There were some very good (players) from Brazil and Russia,” he added.
The Indonesian para table tennis team still has test match agendas for this year, with Astan and other players scheduled to compete at the Para Table Tennis Asian Championships in Beijing, China, from October 14 to 18, 2025.
