Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has urged the forest and land fire handling task force to remain vigilant through August, as several regions continue to experience the peak of the dry season.

Speaking at a national coordination meeting on forest and land fire management in Jakarta on Monday, BMKG Head Dwikorita Karnawati explained that the southern areas of Sumatra island, including South Sumatra and Lampung provinces, are still experiencing the peak of the dry season until August.

"Most regions in Kalimantan have experienced the peak of the dry season in June and July, but some other regions will still experience it into August. To this end, we must all remain vigilant until August," she remarked.

She specifically reminded Riau Province that rainfall during the first 10 days of August is expected to be very low, at 20-50 millimeters, especially in its northern and western areas.

Furthermore, rainfall is forecast to increase to 150 millimeters per 10 days in the last 20 days of August.

Despite the expected increase in rainfall, the Fine Fuel Moisture Code (FFMC) index indicates that the topsoil layer's flammability level remains very high, becoming critical starting July 30, 2025, and then easing after August 3.

To this end, the BMKG emphasized the importance of vigilance among land and air patrol officers, as well as conducting aerial watering and weather modification operations as needed.

"Please ensure there are no more burning activities because the weather conditions are very dry with minimal rain, marked by the color red on the forecast map," the BMKG head emphasized.
