Agus Susilo, a forecaster at the Rendani Manokwari Climatology Station, stated that the tsunami early warning was issued after a magnitude 8.6 earthquake struck the Sea of Kamchatka, Russia, at 6:24 a.m. Western Indonesia Time (WIB) on Wednesday (July 30).
“This earthquake has the potential to trigger tsunami waves in several parts of Indonesia, including Manokwari District,” Agus remarked.
He explained that the tsunami alert for Manokwari is at the “advisory” level, meaning coastal areas might experience tsunami waves below 0.5 meters high, which still warrant caution.
BMKG is closely monitoring the situation through national and international tsunami monitoring systems. The agency also recommended a temporary halt to activities along the coast, including postponing operations of small vessels.
“This includes fishing activities by local fishermen, which we advise to suspend for now,” Agus remarked.
The tsunami early warning applies to several eastern Indonesian regions, including the provinces of Sulawesi, North Maluku, Papua, West Papua, and Southwest Papua, under the Tsunami Warning PD-2 category.
Seven regions in Papua are under tsunami advisory status: Manokwari, northern Raja Ampat, Biak Numfor, Supiori, northern Sorong, Jayapura, and Sarmi.
BMKG urges the public to follow official updates via verified channels such as the Info BMKG app, the website inatews.bmkg.go.id, and its official social media accounts.
