Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Ministry of Higher Education, Science, and Technology (Diktisaintek) has broadened its collaboration with the Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) Ministry to include the development of solar power plants (PLTS) to support clean energy transition.

The two ministries convened a strategic meeting in Jakarta on Tuesday (July 29) to identify ways to implement President Prabowo Subianto’s directive to electrify villages nationwide through PLTS.

“We have included studies on raw materials and battery energy storage systems needed by the ESDM Ministry in our national research program. This reflects the role of higher education in supporting the government,” Diktisaintek Minister Brian Yuliarto noted in a statement released on Wednesday.

He emphasized the importance of encouraging academicians at universities to focus their research on energy, agriculture, and the manufacturing industry to help advance government programs and targets.

Meanwhile, ESDM Minister Bahlil Lahadalia noted that the optimal development and use of PLTS nationwide could reduce electrification costs by up to 50 percent compared to diesel power plants or generators.

During the meeting, the two ministries exchanged views on the national push for PLTS-based electrification and its link to the Red and White Village Cooperatives program and fostering the green economy in rural areas.

They also discussed the possibility of involving these cooperatives in operating PLTS.

Furthermore, the meeting addressed the ongoing drafting of regulations to facilitate the conversion of fossil fuel-powered vehicles into electric ones.

President Prabowo has instructed his aides to ensure that PLTS become the primary electricity source for rural communities to enhance energy security. He highlighted that 100 gigawatts of electricity will be required to meet power demands in all villages across Indonesia.
