"Regional governments, the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB), the Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB), the military and police, the National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas), and the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) have established emergency response posts," he remarked here on Wednesday.
The agencies have also deployed personnel on the ground to support and conduct evacuations, he stated.
According to Gunawan, the evacuation measures include securing evacuation routes, managing crowds, and safeguarding vital coastal infrastructure.
The minister stated that BMKG reported a possible sea level rise of up to 0.5 meters in several Indonesian coastal areas due to the quake.
Regions that may be affected include Papua, North Maluku, Gorontalo, and parts of North Sulawesi. BMKG has also issued tsunami early warnings at beware or alert levels for those areas.
Therefore, Gunawan emphasized that local governments must work to reduce public activity along beaches and ports and update warnings every 30 minutes until an official statement declares the tsunami threat is over.
“All government elements, both at the central and regional levels, are prepared to respond swiftly and properly,” he affirmed.
"Public safety is the government’s top priority. I also urge residents to remain calm, not panic, and follow official instructions on the ground," he remarked.
The BMKG stated earlier this morning that the tsunami early warning issued following the 8.7M earthquake in Kamchatka, Russia, on Wednesday was based on detailed modeling conducted for Indonesia.
The modeling indicated a potential tsunami alert status for 10 regions in eastern Indonesia.
