Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesian Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati stated that the government has allocated Rp2.14 trillion (approximately US$130 million) from this year’s state budget (APBN) to support the tuition-free school program, Sekolah Rakyat (People’s Schools).

“A budget of Rp2.14 trillion has been sourced from the 2025 APBN, and this amount will increase in 2026,” she noted in a post uploaded on her Instagram handle @smindrawati, as cited in Jakarta on Wednesday.

She highlighted that out of the targeted 159 Sekolah Rakyat sites for this year, a total of 63 have begun operations since July 14, serving over nine thousand children from poor or extremely poor families across the country.

The minister remarked that the government plans to launch more Sekolah Rakyat at 37 locations on August 1, followed by an additional 59 sites in early September this year.

Furthermore, she said the Ministry of Social Affairs is currently collecting data on another 41 sites, which will then be surveyed by the Ministry of Public Works for feasibility.

“This program is a testament to the government’s genuine care for children from economically disadvantaged families, providing them with access to quality education,” the state treasurer said.

She emphasized that quality education is essential for these children to grow and build a better future.

President Prabowo Subianto pioneered the Sekolah Rakyat program as a strategic means to expand access to quality education for all children, especially those classified as poor or extremely poor in the National Socioeconomic Single Data (DTSEN).

The government also envisions the program as a tool for breaking the chains of poverty through education and enlightenment.

Adopting a boarding school concept, Sekolah Rakyat offers quality formal, character, and religious education across elementary, junior high, and senior high school levels.
