Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Environment Ministry urges regional governments to form special teams in every Nutrition Fulfillment Unit (SPPG) to process leftovers from the Free Nutritious Meal (MBG) program and convert them into something useful.

"Because the number of SPPGs in each region continues to increase, the relevant offices must pay attention to food leftovers so they can be managed well. It is what the Environment Ministry is focusing on during every MBG monitoring," Environment Minister Hanif Faisol Nurofiq stated in Tangerang, Banten, on Monday.

He remarked that 20 kg of waste is generated from each SPPG, comprising 10 kg from food processing and 10 kg from leftovers like orange peels.

Before greeting students eating the MBG menu at the Tangerang 8 Middle School, he inspected the SPPG to ensure that waste processing and cleanliness are carried out properly.

"All trash from SPPGs is collected by a special unit to be processed later. It is because this waste has many uses, such as for the cultivation of maggots," Nurofiq remarked.

He urged all regional administrations to come up with breakthroughs in managing waste from MBG to prevent new problems.

The minister highlighted the urgency for the regulation and initiative, as more students nationwide become beneficiaries in the national-scale program, and more SPPGs are established in each region.

During the same event, Tangerang Mayor Sachrudin confirmed that all leftover foods from MBG are managed by the Environment Office at recycling facilities, as per the ministry's instruction, to ensure smooth implementation of the program.

"Leftover foods are processed and not thrown away randomly. We have prepared for everything," Sachrudin stressed.
