“The geological agency raised the alert status of Mt Burni Telong in Bener Meriah district from level one to level two or alert on Saturday (August 2, 2025),” the agency’s acting head, Safriadi, informed here on Monday.
The mountain, with an altitude of 2,624 meters above sea level, has been closed to climbers until further notice, he said, adding that the temporary closure is aimed at anticipating any unwanted incidents.
“Thus, the mountain is closed for safety reasons, as a distance of one or some kilometers from its crater is regarded as a danger zone. As usual, many mountaineers climb the mountain ahead of the Independence Day celebration on August 17,” he said.
Safriadi added that his office is continuing to coordinate with the Mount Burni Telong monitoring post to get an update on the mountain’s volcanic activity.
Once the alert status returns to level one or normal, the mountain will be reopened for climbers, he said.
Mount Burni Telong in Bener Meriah district, which is about 284.7 kilometers away from Banda Aceh, the capital of Aceh province, recorded eruptions in 1837, 1939, 1856, 1919, and 1924.
