Jakarta (ANTARA) - President Prabowo Subianto has emphasized Indonesia’s commitment to supporting ASEAN in seeking peaceful solutions to the ongoing civil war in Myanmar and the armed clashes between Thailand and Cambodia.

Speaking at the Cabinet Plenary Meeting at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta on Wednesday, Prabowo took note of conflicts within the region and beyond Southeast Asia that have caused geopolitical and geo-economic instability.

“The conflict in Myanmar continues with no clear path toward a peaceful resolution, though we remain committed to backing ASEAN’s efforts in seeking peaceful solutions among our neighboring countries. Moreover, we are now seeing armed conflict between fellow ASEAN members—Cambodia and Thailand,” he said.

The President further noted that the global and regional dynamics Indonesia is facing — particularly ten months into his term — have become far more complex compared to the early days of his government.

“Currently, we are not only facing the impact of wars and conflicts around the world — the war in Ukraine, the conflict in Middle East, Gaza, the West Bank, Lebanon, and Syria — all of which (have been) devastating and have caused immense casualties right before the eyes of the world,” he said.

He also drew attention to the India-Pakistan conflict and the trade tensions stemming from tariffs imposed by US President Donald Trump on numerous countries, including Indonesia.

The President said that his administration remains focused and composed despite these complex geopolitical and geo-economic conditions.

“We move forward as one team. We negotiate. We deliberate. We do not act emotionally. We do not get provoked. We understand that we have significant interests at stake. The government of Indonesia’s duty is to protect its people, to protect our workers, and their families,” the President told his Cabinet.

The Cabinet Plenary Meeting, led by President Prabowo and accompanied by Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka, marked the eighth such session convened since the duo took office on October 20, 2024.
