"This housing program will have a massive impact on addressing inequality," Hamzah stated during a public discussion titled "Homes for All: The Government's Strategy to Accelerate Access to Decent Housing" in Jakarta on Wednesday.
Hamzah explained that the program is among President Prabowo Subianto's Best Results Quick Programs (PHTC) in response to rural migration driven by the search for decent, affordable housing.
"Therefore, from the outset, the task force has proposed massive housing development, and that has been a campaign promise of the president. One million houses in villages, one million in cities, and one million on the coast," he remarked.
He stated that the government launched this initiative to address housing shortages, as millions of Indonesian families still lack adequate housing.
He revealed that 9.9 million families are homeless, while 26.9 million others live in uninhabitable houses.
To provide decent housing for Indonesians, he outlined the government's three priority steps: renovating two million houses in villages, building one million new houses in urban areas through strategic partnerships with the private sector, and developing housing in coastal areas.
"It turns out that people in villages need home renovations. Therefore, within the program approved by the Ministry of Finance, we have allocated two million houses for renovation," he remarked.
