Palembang (ANTARA) - The National Nutrition Agency (BGN) has set a target for the Free Nutritious Meals (MBG) program to reach at least 60 thousand schoolchildren across the Greater Ogan Komering Ulu (OKU) region in South Sumatra Province.

The region encompasses the districts of OKU, South OKU, and East OKU.

"This is part of our collaborative efforts to nurture a generation of healthy, strong, and smart talents through the provision of free nutritious meals for school-age children," BGN representative Alwin Supriyadi said in Palembang City, South Sumatra, on Sunday.

Speaking after promoting the national program in Madang Suku III Sub-district, East OKU, he noted that the BGN aims to distribute free nutritious meals not only to schoolchildren but also to pregnant women and the elderly.

He added that the government intends the MBG program to curb cases of childhood stunting, a type of chronic malnutrition that hampers children’s growth and development.

According to him, improving people’s nutritional intake is essential to producing a superior generation for the nation. He affirmed that the MBG program is not merely about distributing food -- it is an investment expected to shape a brighter future through children.

"We are well aware that the success of this program heavily relies on collaboration among all parties, especially local residents. Therefore, we truly appreciate the support and cooperation demonstrated by public figures who have been significantly contributing to the MBG program," Supriyadi remarked.

Earlier, during the MBG promotion activity in East OKU, legislator from Commission IX of the House of Representatives (DPR) Irma Suryani told the public that she would work to attract business actors to invest in developing MBG kitchens -- officially called nutrition fulfillment units (SPPGs) -- in South Sumatra.

She also urged local governments to prioritize empowering local residents in the construction and operation of SPPGs.
