Jakarta (ANTARA) - Speaker of the House of Representatives (DPR) Puan Maharani, during the 80th Anniversary of Indonesia’s Independence Day, emphasized that the vision of Golden Indonesia is a noble promise that must be continuously fought for.

“Eight decades of independence is an important moment to reflect on our nation’s journey and strengthen our shared commitment to building a better future. Golden Indonesia is not an empty dream, but a noble promise that we fight for together,” she said in a statement here on Sunday.

She stressed that the essence of independence must not be limited to an annual ceremony. According to her, the spirit of independence should be really felt in daily lives.

“Independence should not stop at a ceremonial level. For the people, the meaning of being independent must be experienced in daily lives, having food on the table, being able to send their children to school, and accessing healthcare without worry,” she remarked.

Indonesia’s 80th year of independence is also a time for reflection, she added.

She explained that the true measure of independence lies not in how long the nation has stood, but in how present and responsive the state is in easing the burdens of its people.

“Can the people afford food prices? Do parents still have to borrow money to pay for their children's education? Can villagers and those in remote areas access healthcare without traveling for hours?,” she remarked.

She also highlighted the theme of this year’s Independence Day, “United and Sovereign, Prosperous People, Advanced Indonesia,” and pointed out that it could only be realized if the state truly meets the needs of its people.

“The government must present policies that are not just right on paper, but truly relieve people’s burdens amid global economic uncertainties,” she affirmed.
