Jakarta (ANTARA) - Chief of the National Police (Polri) General Listyo Sigit Prabowo and Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) Commander General Agus Subiyanto highlighted the public’s high enthusiasm for commemorating Indonesia’s 80th Independence Day anniversary.

According to General Prabowo, a flag-raising ceremony at the Merdeka Palace in Jakarta on Sunday morning (August 17) was more than symbolic -- it reflected the shared will for unity among Indonesian citizens.

"We have seen people immersing themselves in the festivities of this 80-year milestone, which is certainly a positive thing," he noted in a statement cited here on Monday.

He then stressed the importance of Polri and TNI maintaining close synergy to serve the people by ensuring order and security, particularly during the month of independence.

"Together with the TNI commander, I am determined to work hand in hand in safeguarding harmony and unity, while supporting government programs that aim to boost people’s welfare in pursuit of the Golden Indonesia 2045 vision," he said.

TNI Commander General Subiyanto shared a similar sentiment, saying that the large crowds at the Merdeka Palace demonstrated the public’s enthusiasm for celebrating eight decades of independence.

"We could see numerous people coming to the palace with great enthusiasm," he remarked.

He also praised the flag-raising troop and highlighted the aerial show performed by TNI acrobatic planes and fighter jets and Polri helicopters above the palace.

"I think the flag-raising troop did a very good job. Meanwhile, the TNI and Polri demonstrated their professionalism with their aircraft in the aerial spectacle," he said.

Sunday’s celebrations began with a morning ceremony reenacting Indonesia’s proclamation of independence, chaired for the first time by President Prabowo Subianto. He also presided over the flag-lowering ceremony in the afternoon.

Beyond the ceremonies, the government organized public feasts, parades, entertainment shows, and fireworks and drone displays to enliven the commemoration in Jakarta under the theme “United and Sovereign, Prosperous People, Advanced Indonesia.”
