Jakarta (ANTARA) - Through their Social Forestry Business Unit (KUPS), the Forestry Ministry has created wood chip products as part of efforts to support renewable energy adoption.

Secretary General of the Forestry Ministry, Mahfudz, said here on Thursday that they have initiated this alongside energy suppliers, in which some energy crops are cultivated in plots to produce wood chips.

KUPS' lands are not just utilized for ecological purposes, but also managed with agroforestry, in which they plant species that can grow rapidly and create biomass, so it won't interfere with the forest’s main purpose, concurrently improving the local economy, Mahfudz elaborated.

His administration also collaborates with many companies in the energy sector, such as PLN, the state’s electricity company, and Restrindo, as a form of their commitment to support the national energy transition.

Some collaborations they have established include a co-firing program, where biomass and coal are mixed in steam power plants. He noted that the method can gradually reduce the use of fossil fuels as energy sources, replacing them with a more eco-friendly substitute.

He confirmed that KUPS will be the supplier of the biomass, sourced from the plots they own.

According to him, the initiative needs cooperation from stakeholders and sectors, such as industries, companies, the workforce, villages, tourism, as well as other ministries and institutions, because at the moment, not many buy and use products from the renewable energy sector.
