According to Director General Mashudi, the authority decided to relocate the 1,300 high-risk inmates so they could receive more appropriate treatment in the new facilities.
“This is not only our effort to eradicate drugs and mobile phones in prisons, but also our way to provide proper treatment for inmates,” Mashudi stated in a written remark on Sunday.
He noted that the latest transfer of 196 inmates to Nusa Kambangan was part of an intensified strategy under the leadership of Immigration and Correction Affairs Minister Agus Andrianto.
The 196 inmates came from Riau Islands (57), West Java (55), South Sumatra (21), North Sumatra (6), West Sumatra (4), and Riau (3). They were transferred to Nusa Kambangan prisons on August 22 and 23, 2024.
The transfer was carried out under tight security involving prison officers, intelligence personnel, and local police. The inmates were then placed in both maximum-security and super-maximum-security complexes on the island.
Once in Nusa Kambangan, the inmates are expected to receive security measures and treatment suited to their risk classification.
“We hope that Nusa Kambangan will mold them into better citizens,” Mashudi said.
“So that when the time comes for them to return to society, they will be mentally and behaviorally ready,” he added, emphasizing the core mission of Indonesia’s correctional system.
