Jakarta (ANTARA) - President Prabowo Subianto's plan to build a prison on a remote island for corrupt individuals could improve Indonesia's correctional system, Speaker of Commission XIII of the House of Representatives (DPR) Willy Aditya stated.

He contended that the president's initiative should be viewed from a broader perspective rather than simply as a measure to deter corruption.

In a written statement received by ANTARA in Jakarta on Wednesday, Aditya referenced the issue of overcrowding in correctional facilities across the country.

To address this issue and pave the way for more effective and humane correctional services, he suggested that the government utilize Indonesia's numerous small islands and establish more prisons there.

He stated that new prisons could be built on the 363 small islands in Aceh Province or the 229 islands in North Sumatra Province.

Regarding criminals currently incarcerated on Java Island, the lawmaker highlighted the possibility of relocating them to new prisons in the nearby provinces of Lampung and West Nusa Tenggara (NTB).

He emphasized that the primary goal of correctional facilities is not only to restrict the criminals' freedom but also to rehabilitate and prepare them for reintegration into society.

"Rehabilitation programs for prisoners, regardless of their crimes, are essential for preparing them to reenter society once they have served their sentences," he remarked.

With this perspective, the legislator called on relevant ministries to conduct a comprehensive study on President Prabowo’s plan.

Earlier, on March 13, the president announced his intention to create a prison on a remote island specifically for corrupt individuals due to their severe offenses against the Indonesian nation.

"I will also allocate a budget to build a prison in a secluded location from where it will be impossible for corrupt individuals to escape," he remarked at the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education headquarters in Jakarta.

"They (corruptors) should know that I am willing to die for this nation and this state," he stated while affirming his steadfast commitment to combating corruption.
