Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia's Minister of Religious Affairs, Nasaruddin Umar, has voiced strong support for the government’s plan to transfer Hajj and Umrah duties from his ministry to the Hajj Organizing Agency (BP Haji), saying the move would mark a strategic step toward improving services for pilgrims.

"Let us continue praying for the plan because its successful implementation can help the government manage Hajj services in a more concentrated manner through BP Haji. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Religious Affairs will focus more on religious and educational matters,” he stated in Jakarta on Monday.

Umar emphasized that the reassignment of tasks aligns with President Prabowo Subianto's commitment to streamlining bureaucracy and enhancing services for Indonesian Hajj and Umrah pilgrims.

He expressed optimism that the reform would lead to more professional services while allowing his ministry to strengthen its role in education and interfaith guidance.

"This serves as a major step toward realizing more integrated services. It is our hope that Indonesian Hajj pilgrims will have access to ever-improving services in the coming years," he remarked, while also praising President Prabowo for initiating an overhaul of Indonesia's Hajj and Umrah system.

The proposal is part of ongoing discussions between the government and the House of Representatives (DPR) on revising Law No. 8 of 2019 on Hajj and Umrah. A draft law has been formulated, which includes elevating BP Haji to ministerial level by transforming it into the Ministry of Hajj and Umrah.

During a meeting in Jakarta on Monday, the government and Commission VIII of the DPR agreed to advance the draft law to a parliamentary plenary session, paving the way for its possible implementation next year.
