Surabaya (ANTARA) - Acting Director for Southeast Asia of the Foreign Affairs Ministry Dewi Justicia Meidiwaty stated that the growing global awareness of halal products has propelled Indonesia to emerge as a leader and hub for the halal industry.

"We are well-positioned in this industry to lead globally thanks to our strong domestic market and growing global awareness of halal products," Meidiwaty said in Surabaya on Tuesday.

She conveyed that at the Halal Indonesia Goes Regional: Dialogue on Market Expansion of the Indonesian Halal Industrial Zone.

Meidiwaty said the halal industry has now grown into a global powerhouse worth trillions of dollars, influencing nearly every industry, including food, pharmaceuticals, shipping, finance, cosmetics, and lifestyle goods.

Even for food manufacturing products alone, the global halal industry is estimated to be worth US$3.27 trillion by 2028, she said.

In this regard, according to her, Indonesia has a significant opportunity to capture this potential, partly because 89 percent of the country's population is Muslim.

The large Muslim population gives Indonesia a dynamic and growing domestic market, even for halal products and services.

Furthermore, Indonesia is preparing Halal Industrial Zones (KIH) -- specially designed areas with facilities and infrastructure to support the development of the halal industry and production of halal products. One such area is the Sidoarjo Halal Industrial Park (HIPS).

According to Meidiwaty, KIH is a strategic platform that combines innovation, compliance, infrastructure, and international trade opportunities.

However, she emphasized that market expansion needs to be planned and implemented effectively so that these zones can reach their full potential.

Furthermore, coordination between stakeholders is also crucial, including improving halal certification and advancing international financial sector studies with partners in Southeast Asia, South and Central Asia, and the Middle East.

"The halal industry can also create numerous jobs and contribute significantly to our overall economic growth," Meidiwaty said.
