The market, which is 17,653 square meters in total, will be equipped with facilities such as an ice factory, cold storage for fish, public toilets, a liquid waste processor, port, fish market, seafood stalls, parking area, park, power supply, and temporary waste site, Marine and Fisheries Minister Sakti Wahyu Trenggono said.
During his visit to Natuna, Tuesday, the minister stated that the total area comprises 7,629 square meters of land and 10,024 square meters of marine area that will be reclaimed.
The modern fish market is established to serve as a clean, tidy trading center, to ensure people's comfort in conducting activities here. Moreover, the market will represent a fisheries-based economic development in Natuna, and could serve as an example for other islands across the country.
“The management of this market will be carried out by the Red and White Village Cooperative,” he added.
The minister disclosed that the development plan for the market has existed for quite a while, however he only pursued it after visiting the site and receiving full support from Head of Natuna District Cen Sui Lan.
“Now that I’ve come here, supported by Mrs. Head of District. There are plenty of things that need to be resolved, and she will address them soon,” he noted.
Trenggono stated that the total budget for the construction of the modern market is Rp91.2 billion (around US$5.6 million). The funds are from a grant by the Japanese Government through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), he informed.
He explained that this grant is a form of international collaboration aimed at supporting the development of Indonesia’s maritime and fisheries sector, particularly in outermost regions like Natuna.
He also confirmed that a contractor has been picked for the construction of this modern market, which is scheduled to begin soon.
