Jakarta (ANTARA) - The government aims to modernize and economically empower coastal 1,100 villages through the Red and White Fishing Village (KNMP) in stages through 2027, according to Marine Affairs and Fisheries Minister Sakti Wahyu Trenggono.

"This program was directly invented by President Prabowo Subianto to bolster the productivity and welfare of coastal communities. Hence, we must ensure that it runs properly and brings concrete benefits," Trenggono said.

As quoted in a statement here on Thursday, he explained that the ministry would implement the program by equipping fishing villages with adequate docks, modern fish markets, cold storage facilities, ship repair shops, fish auction centers, training hubs, and culinary areas.

The minister expressed optimism that the initiative would create more organized villages capable of producing competitive, high-value products, ultimately boosting fishermen’s incomes.

He underscored that the Marine Affairs and Fisheries Ministry had set a target of developing at least 100 KNMPs this year.

Trenggono highlighted that the ministry had so far received 910 proposals for the program from various coastal regions and aquaculture villages alike across the country, affirming that they would be selected in a fair, strict, and transparent manner.

As part of the rollout, he said that the ministry had designated a village in Biak Numfor District, Papua Province, as the pilot model for the first phase, which will serve as a benchmark for future KNMPs across Indonesia.

He made the statement during his visit to Riau Islands Province on Wednesday (August 27), where he reviewed the feasibility of several sites proposed for the KNMP program.

The locations include North Cemaga Village in Natuna District and Sembulang Village, Kasu Village, and Sekanak Raya Village in Batam City.
