Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Ministry of Trade recorded potential transactions worth US$128.51 million at the 27th Japan International Seafood & Technology Expo (JISTE) 2025 in Tokyo, held from August 20–22.

The ministry’s Director General of National Export Development, Fajarini Puntodewi, said on Thursday that more than 80 percent of the potential deals came from shrimp, seaweed, tuna, and processed tuna products.

“The positive response from Japanese buyers shows optimism for strengthening Indonesia’s position in the global supply chain. Their consumption trends prioritize quality, food safety, and sustainability, which creates wider opportunities for us as a major supplier of tropical seafood,” she stated.

At the expo, the Indonesian pavilion showcased 15 fisheries businesses featuring products such as shrimp, octopus, squid, crab, fresh tuna, cuttlefish, and various seaweed products. Puntodewi noted that shrimp, seaweed, tuna, and processed tuna drew the most attention.

Shrimp remains highly favored due to its popularity in Japanese cuisine, especially sushi and tempura.

Indonesian seaweed is also in demand as a raw material for both high-value food and non-food products.

According to Miftah Farid, the ministry’s Director of Primary Product Export Development, the event was a concrete step for Indonesia to maintain cooperation with Japanese partners while also promoting diversification of fishery products, with shrimp, seaweed, and tuna as leading commodities.

“Sea urchins (uni) are also attracting interest from the Japanese market because of declining domestic production caused by overfishing and changes in the marine ecosystem. This opens new opportunities for Indonesian suppliers,” Farid noted.

Japan is one of Indonesia’s main fishery export markets. In 2024, exports from this sector to Japan were valued at US$398.75 million, while from January to June 2025, they reached US$188.15 million.

Indonesia’s main exports to Japan include shrimp, skipjack tuna, tuna, crab, and mollusks.
